Mary recently attended the official opening of Capital Football’s upgraded, drought-proof facility at Hawker.

“One of the major challenges our communities are faced with is longer and more severe droughts caused by climate change,” Mary said. “Hence we need to find more creative and efficient methods to conserve water,” she added.

The facility has a synthetic surface which meets FIFA’s highest two-star rating, the same standard used by professional leagues in Europe. As it will not rely on our drinking water supply for irrigation, it will give the Canberra community, especially the people of Belconnen, access to an all year round multi-purpose sports facility.

Being the first of its kind in the ACT, the Hawker Football Facility is expected to provide a boost to our local tourism by hosting top-level tournaments which, will help attract players and spectators from interstate.

Mary, who is the Deputy Chair of the Standing Committee on Climate Change, Environment and Water, described the new facility as a win for the environment as well as a win for the community.
