At the National Press Club on Thursday 20 February, Mary joined a diverse contingent of media, academics and dignitaries in witnessing the installation of Dr Tom Calma AO as Chancellor of the University of Canberra.

During his address to the national press club Dr Calma outlined his vision for the Tertiary Education sector and greater participation by Indigenous Australians.
Dr Calma’s most recent position was that of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner at the Australian Human Rights Commission from 2004 to 2010. He also served as Race Discrimination Commissioner from 2004 until 2009. He has campaigned for health, social justice, inclusion and equality issues in Australia and abroad.

His 2005 Social Justice Report laid the foundation for the Close the Gap Campaign; a collaboration of some 40 Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian health and human rights groups. Dr Calma takes over the role of Chancellor of UC at a time when the university is expanding rapidly and pushing for both academic and research world rankings.
