Mary, along with Volunteering ACT, has called for 650 volunteers to help stage the 2009 UCI Mountain Bike and Trials Championships, this September 1 to 6, at Stromlo Forest Park.

With the World Mountain Bike Championships expected to attract 40,000 people, several hundred journalists from across the world and an estimated TV and online audience of 30 to 35 million people, the event presents a fantastic opportunity to show case Canberra.

There are already volunteers who have signed up from all over Australia, as well as the US, Canada and Europe. However, the involvement of Volunteering ACT will provide a significant boost to the recruitment.

Mary, who is a former CEO of Volunteering ACT, said that “Volunteering ACT has an extensive amount of experience and network of contacts throughout Canberra and the region”.

Volunteers will be paramount to the success of the event, and Mary encouraged anyone who thinks they can make a contribution to put their name forward.

Roles range from working in the media centre, information booths, merchandise areas and VIP marquee services or course marshalling. No previous experience is required as full training will be provided.
