National Volunteer Week again saw Volunteering ACT announce their ACT Volunteer of the Year Awards.

Margo Hodge from Evatt, was named the 2008 Volunteer of the Year in recognition of her work with people with disabilities and also for her work as a volunteer co-ordinator / teacher at the ANU International Education Office's English classes for overseas students, researchers, visiting fellows and their families.

Margo is a paraplegic and has been confined to a wheelchair following a car accident in 1974.

Among others recognised was Steve Goodman, the President of the Warehouse Circus, an organisation that provides training in circus skills for for up to 300 children.
In 2004, the young people from the circus presented Steve with the 'Super Hero Award' in recognition of his work in making a difference to the lives of young people.

Others recognised at the ceremony were Ted Fleming, Tom van Gerwen, Glenys Joliffe, Michael Freeman, Julie Grehan, Kevin Benson, Alan Skelton, Desmond Leyden, Ann Brown and Dylis McConnell-Hunt.

"Canberra has the highest level of volunteer involvement in the Nation," commented Mary Porter.

"Having helped start these awards back in 1990, I am very pleased to see how they have grown ," Mary continued. "It is vital that the community recognises the very valuable contribution that volunteers make to our community."
