The Canberra North Branch of National Seniors Australia has continued their valued contribution to the community by donating two wheelchairs to the Ginninderra Nursing Home. The cost of the chairs was $1,000.

Each year, the branch makes donations to charities in line with National Seniors objectives and this year also made a contribution of $500 to the National Seniors Foundation whose aim it is to improve the quality of life for seniors as they age by fostering independence, dignity and purpose.

The Foundation was established in 1983 as a community service imitative, and to date has supported 300 community projects to benefit seniors.

The Canberra North Branch, which is based in Belconnen, is one of four in the ACT region and has over 110 active members who meet monthly as well as organising social activities.

Members pay a voluntary entrance fee for each meeting to cover costs and also to build the funds from which the charitable donations are made.

With a national membership of 280,000 , National Seniors is Australia's largest organisation representing those 50 years and over, with members including self-funded retirees, those in receipt of social security benefits as well as those who are still in the paid workforce.

National Seniors actively lobbies governments at all levels representing the views of older Australians and is represented on numerous consultative committees.

Speaking at the presentation of the wheelchairs, Mary Porter thanked the members for their continued work and also for the support they provided to one another.

"While the importance of the policy and advocacy work undertaken by National Seniors can not be underestimated, nor can the benefits that individuals derive from their membership.

"Belonging to an organisation which encourages older people to remain active in their community is vital to help ensure both their physical and emotional well-being."

Those over 50 wishing to find out more can call Philip Pellatt, the Canberra North Branch Secretary on 62542758.
