Mary recently attended the 2012 Canberra Area Theatre Awards (also known as the CAT Awards.

The CAT Awards have provided an opportunity to celebrate those who have made an outstanding contribution to theatre in the Canberra region since the establishment of the awards in 1994. They particularly celebrate the achievements of non-professional theatre groups.

The CAT Awards have grown significantly in stature and scope since they were first created. The judging panel has grown from six members to 17 and the areas that the CAT Awards cover has also expanded.

“I believe that live theatre plays a significant role in our culture.

“The CAT Awards give us the opportunity to recognise the contribution that people make in bringing live theatre to Canberra and the region,” Mary said.

Mary has been the patron of the CAT Awards since 2006 and has attended the presentation of awards for 10 of the last 11 years.

“It is a great honour to be the patron of such an important event. The awards are always well deserved and the night is always exciting and entertaining, bringing many people from across our region to celebrate.

“I would also like to thank all those who volunteer their time so generously to make the CAT Awards possible. I would specifically like to mention Ms Coralie Wood OAM, the founder and primary organiser of the CAT Awards.

“Ms Wood has worked for many years to ensure the Canberra art scene has remained vital and vibrant,” Mary said. “I think Ms Wood deserves the thanks and appreciation of all members of the Canberra community; her work has made Canberra a better place to live for all of us.”
