Mary was glad to attend the launch of the Canberra United W-League team’s season launch and to present the players with their shirts for the upcoming season.

Being born in the UK, Mary is a strong supporter of football, formerly known as soccer, in the ACT.

Canberra United, which was one of the founding teams when the W-League began in 2008, has been wildly successful making the finals every season since it began.

The team also enjoyed a particularly successful season last season, winning the W-League.

Canberra United is also unique in the W-League, being the only team which is not affiliated with an A-League club.

“I am very proud to be a supporter of Canberra United. They are a team of outstanding athletes who work hard and have deservedly been very successful,” Mary said.

Canberra United also do considerable work in the community, with members of the team frequently visiting ACT schools and regularly conducting skills workshops for young people.

“It is great to see sportspeople using their position to help their community. I was also very happy for the football season to recommence as I very much enjoy watching Canberra United play.

“It was particularly great to attend Canberra United’s first game on election day, it was a very welcome distraction. Even better that it was a nil all draw against the Brisbane Roar. It is also pleasing that Canberra United won its first away game, against the Newcastle Jets, five to nil.

“I would like to wish the team all the best for the rest of the season. I have no doubt the team will do very well,” Mary concluded.
