Whilst work places can be the setting for defining moments in an individual’s career, it is not often that an employer can say that she presided over an event that has profound meaning in the life of an employee. Recently Mary did exactly that.

“It was a very special occasion for one of my advisers, Charles Njora,” Mary said. “He will always remember Friday, 25 September 2009 as the day that he became an Australian citizen.”

Charles was born in Kenya and arrived in Australia in 2001. He has been working for Mary since May.

“It was my great pleasure to be the Presiding Officer at the ceremony that saw Charles, and his partner Ms Kristeen Riungu and daughter Miss Joy Murimi, become Australian citizens,” Mary said.

The ceremony was one of two Australian Citizenship ceremonies held that day when eighty
people received their Australian Citizenship, including 14 family groups.

“I know what a day like this means to a person, I was born in England and became an Australian citizen at a Citizenship ceremony in the early 1990s,” Ms Porter said.

“Now I have at least two Citizenship ceremonies that will remain in the forefront of my mind for many years to come.”
