In March Mary Porter called on students across the ACT to turn off their lights during Earth Hour.

“There are many things schools can do for School Earth Hour,” Mary said. “Students can turn off their computers while staff members can turn off
Photocopiers.”

As Earth Hour 2009 took place on a Saturday 28 March schools were not able to participate directly, so the Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative (AuSSI) ACT encouraged them to take part in the inaugural ACT School Earth Hour, between 11am and 12pm.

To mark the event, Mary visited Hawker Primary School, which was the first ACT public school to be accredited as a Waste Wise School and won the 2006 ACT NOWaste Award for Leadership in Education. AuSSI ACT is a program that helps schools to reduce their ecological footprint.

“I think that Hawker Primary School students should be proud of their record. They also established a School Environmental Leadership Program. It is a fine record that merits recognition,” Mary said.
