Recently Mary chaired a series of interschool debates in the Legislative Assembly.

“It is important that our young people have this opportunity to learn more about the political process in the ACT, and get a grasp on Australia’s democratic system”, said Mary.

Each school nominated a team of four members, with one member presenting the team’s case, and the other three members responding to one of the set questions as well as questions without notice from the opposing school teams . Some of the topics included issues such as the death penalty, the value of an Australian Republic, a bill of rights for Australia and civil unions in the ACT.

“There were some good arguments presented by the students, and there were some impressive orators participating,” Mary said.
