Whilst inspecting progress on the new horticultural facility during March, Mary congratulated the Canberra Institute of Technology on its commitment to sustainability not only at its Bruce campus but across all programs.

“CIT has moved to recognise the demand from our community and industry for the need to deliver vocational education and training in sustainability. The CIT now offer four specific qualifications in the areas of renewable energy, ecology and environmental management; and sustainability,” Mary commented.

Pleasingly, significant parts of this new horticultural facility are six weeks ahead of schedule. It will have environmentally sustainable development features and provide for the latest in water-efficient plantings, efficient water management and recycling processes on a site that is potentially carbon-neutral.

The third appropriation of February 2009 also provides CIT with $2.67 million for projects which include: environmental initiatives, including the installation of water storage tanks at Reid and Bruce for irrigation; the installation of solar hot water systems at Reid to replace existing electric hot water units, and the installation of water-saving devices on all campuses.

“CIT’s commitment to the environment and the whole area of sustainability is now demonstrated across all facilities, through its operations and its main charter, the delivery of practical vocational education and training to the ACT community,” Mary concluded.
