On Sunday16 May, Mary, and her newly acquired dog Lola, joined thousands of others in the RSPCA’s Million Paws Walk, setting off from at Commonwealth Park.

“The annual fundraising event is now in its 16th year and is crucial in supporting the ongoing work of the RSPCA,” Mary said.

The RSPCA is well-known to thousands of Canberrans through its rescue, shelter and re-homing of domestic animals. RSPCA also rescues and cares for injured wildlife, investigates allegations of cruelty, provides input to the development of legislation and plays a critical role in raising community awareness about animal welfare.

“This year the Prime Minister, Mr Kevin Rudd, joined the over twelve thousand people and four thousand dogs who attended the walk, to help raise over $150,000” for the RSPCA in the ACT,” Mary stated. “These funds help in the running of the RSPCA shelter at Weston, as well as
supporting their education campaigns and inspectorate services,” she added.

The ACT Government has a close relationship with the RSPCA. Mary Visited the RSPCA a few weeks ago and is in constant contact with the organisation in relation to policy aimed at improving animal welfare in the ACT.

Mary also recently raised a motion in the Legislative Assembly that addressed responsible pet ownership, as she has an ongoing interest in animal welfare in the ACT.
