Mary recently opened the latest art exhibition of local artist Dirk Bouma, A Brush with the Inland and Beyond, at the CSIRO Discovery Centre.

“Upon retiring from the CSIRO after a distinguished 30 year career Dirk Bouma decided to interpret, through the medium of painting, some of the many landscapes he had the opportunity to experience first hand during his career,” Mary said.

The result of Dirk Bouma’s work is a fascinating depiction of his sense of light and colour. The colours of various Australian landscapes are unique, and this exhibition is a personal expression of the landscapes that touched his life.

“Beyond the obvious quality of Dirk’s work, the exhibition is a terrific example of what talents and endeavours we can explore and develop in our retirement.

“Of course, I am sure that the wider community will benefit from seeing the results of Dirk’s travels and his artistic interpretation of the many places he visited.

This exhibition is the product of a lifelong affinity with nature, and it is wonderful that we are able to share it.

“Seeing these paintings brings back memories of my 12 years living in remote areas of the Northern Territory and also my visits to remote South Australia.”
