On 15th February, Mary hosted one of three proposed sessions aimed at consulting with key community groups in relation to a draft policy to increase synergies between local schools and community sporting groups.

“Sport should not be considered only as a source of national pride- it also plays an important role in building stronger communities and in promoting healthy lifestyles, contributing to the well-being of all Australians, and of course all Canberrans,” Ms Porter said.

The first consultation session was hosted by ACTSport, and offered a number of local sporting clubs the opportunity to comment on the draft policy.

“I am consulting with relevant groups to see that there is scope for enhanced collaboration between local sporting groups and local schools, whereby such facilities are made available to local clubs in exchange for the human resources to help schools promote more active lifestyles.

“I believe that the current context is perfect to engage the local community in discussion on initiatives that capitalise on existing and emerging sports facilities and community groups in the ACT. Not only does it seem highly likely that the Crawford Report will re-emphasise participation in grass-roots level sport, but facilities built through Building the Education Revolution funding has provided an incredible opportunity that we need to capitalise on,” Ms Porter commented.

The first consultation session was positive, with valuable contributions made by all present.

“I was happy with the energy and input of all participants. We were able to identify a range of opportunities and challenges for this draft policy, and I will take these considerations on board as I work towards a final draft,” Ms Porter said.

“I aim to present this final draft to the Minister for Sport, Mr Andrew Barr, by the middle of the year,” Ms Porter concluded.
