Mary Porter was present as the Minister for Education and Training, Andrew Barr, handed the key to the new Kingsford Smith School to the school community.

The school boasts state-of-the-art facilities to assist in catering to the needs of all students. It also has extensive sporting facilities and areas that will be accessible to the public.

The school features a purpose built early childhood wing and facilities for students with special needs in both primary and high school areas.

It also provides students and staff with the best information and communication technology, including interactive whiteboards and wireless access points to allow students and staff to use wireless technology throughout the school.

The school’s environmentally sustainable design feature encourages students to be aware of climate change. Such features include building orientation, solar passive design and underground rainwater storage tanks.

“As Deputy Chair of the Standing Committee on Climate Change, Environment and Water, it is pleasing to see such environmentally conscious planning for the school in the face of climate change,” Mary commented.

The school will be able to accommodate over 1,000 students with up to 110 teaching and ancillary staff. Enrolment will be in stages beginning this year with students from preschool to year 7, then expanding progressively each year until the school has students enrolled to year 10 in 2012.

“I congratulate everyone involved in the building of the school,” Mary said, “it is a very exciting project and I can’t wait to see the school progress to its capacity in 2012.”
