On the 18th of December Mary attended the year 6 graduation ceremony at Giralang Primary School.

A very full program included a welcome to country by Duncan Smith, along with some wise words for the graduating students about their journey to high school. “Just be yourselves” he said, noting that those first days might be tough, but that it would all be worth it and he had every confidence that they would succeed at their new schools. The students also took advantage of the opportunity to surprise the school with a new art work. The piece, using indigenous designs, (shown above) reflects the values of the school and will be hung above the stage in the school hall.

Commonwealth games athlete Lauren Boden lent some star power to the event by presenting the school’s annual sport award. Lauren competes in the 400 metre hurdles, 400 metres and long jump. And was the youngest woman to win the 400 metres hurdle event at the Australian national championships.

The ceremony not only marked the graduation of the Year 6 class of 2013, it was also the last assembly for retiring principal, Mrs Trish Keller OAM. “Trish has done a fantastic job at Giralang Primary School over the years and her experience and passion for education will be missed. We wish her all the best for her future” Mary said.
