Mary recently joined members of Canberra United in celebrating their recent W-League title.

Canberra United have had an outstanding 2011-12 season, not losing a single match throughout the season.

This season was drawn to a fitting end when Canberra United defeated Brisbane Roar 3-2 in a thrilling W-League Grand Final at McKellar Stadium.

Canberra United has participated in the W-League since its formation in 2008, but before now has not won a championship.

“It is excellent to see a Canberra sporting team achieve such outstanding success.

“As a regular attendee of Canberra United W-League games, I witness how hard members of the team work each week on the field and I know they work even harder off the field. It is definitely a well deserved victory. I would like to join all those who have already congratulated Canberra United on its outstanding victory.

“It is important to also recognise the contributions made by the coaching and administrative staff; without this support, it is doubtful that Canberra United could have achieved the success that it has this season.

In addition to being outstanding athletes, members of the Canberra United W-League team also appear at schools and community groups to speak about healthy living and to conduct skill clinics. This is particularly important given the identified difficulties encouraging children to be active and eat well so that they can avoid health problems later in life.

“It is always good to see young Canberrans doing their best to help other young Canberrans. I applaud members of the Canberra United W-League who have volunteered their time to help others and would encourage them to continue doing so and I congratulate the CEO, Ms Heather Reid, on her leadership,” Mary concluded.
