Recently Mary presented the DonateLife ACT Book of Life to the Director of Libraries ACT, Ms Vanessa Little, to mark Donate Life week 2013.
The Book of Life includes many inspirational Canberra stories about organ and tissue donation of both recipients and donors’ families.
In 2012, as a result of the generosity of 12 organ donors and their families, Canberra achieved its highest-ever annual organ donation outcomes. 30 people received life-saving organ transplants and, in addition 66 people received the gift of sight from eye tissue donors.
“It is important to talk about organ and tissue donation, and to share your donation decision with the people closest to you,” Mary said. “The most important thing that helps a family confirm a loved one's wishes is by asking and knowing those wishes today.
“I strongly encourage all Canberrans to take some time to share your wish with your family and close friends, and ask them about their wishes,” Mary stated.
“My husband and I have both made this decision, and through personal experience we have seen the wonderful gift donors have given,” Mary concluded.
