ACTION bus drivers have held another dinner dance and auction and raised $14,000 for the ACT Eden-Monaro Cancer Support Group and Australia's Helping Hand.

The committee, comprising Lindsay and David McMurdo, Peter Maggs, Julia Taylor and Carl Pillig are all ACTION employees and were joined by former ACTION staff member Greg Bayliss, to organise the function at the Deakin Soccer Club.

The ACT Eden-Monaro Cancer Support Group manager, Mark Green, said all the funds they received would be used to assist cancer patients and their families in the Canberra/Queanbeyan region.

"This sort of fund raising is vital for us", said Mr Green, "it will help our clients meet their day to day living costs like electricity, rent and food."

Mr Green also praised the efforts of ACTION staff at the Tuggeranong Depot who cook meals that are distributed to clients and their families to help ease the pressure they are under.

Australia's Helping Hand, which is raising funds to build a school in Vietnam to train orphans in IT, was formed by another former long-time ACTION employee Ian Collard.

"If we don't help them develop worthwhile skills their future is pretty bleak", Mr Collard commented .

Committee chair Lindsay McMurdo, stated the group was pleased to help the community. "Driving buses for a living you see and hear a lot about people who are doing it really tough and this is our way of putting something back."

"ACTION drivers are a fantastic bunch of men and women and it's great to be able to be involved in their fundraisers," Mary said.
