Mary, in her role as Deputy Speaker of the ACT Legislative Assembly, hosted a visiting delegation from Papua New Guinea. The Australia-PNG Emerging leaders delegation visited the Assembly with the purpose of promoting a continuing dialogue between young Papua New Guineans and Australians. The visit also gives an insight into parliamentary processes, democratic principles and the unique operations of our unicameral Assembly. While in Australia the group also visited Federal Parliament and the Parliament of NSW.

On the 5th of December 2013 Mary attended the “Volunteering A CAPITAL Experience EXPO”. The expo showcased the diverse range of volunteering opportunities that are available to people of all ages and from all walks of life in the Capital region. It was an opportunity for organisations to promote their volunteering programs to the general community and attract and recruit people who are actively seeking a volunteering position

Last month Ms Mary Porter AM MLA, Member for Ginninderra, addressed the India-Australia Association of Canberra (IAAC) annual event, held at the Theo Notaras Multicultural Centre.

The IAAC annual event celebrates the contribution of volunteers in the Association and recognises all achievements by individuals in the India-Australia community.

“It’s great to be here this evening, to celebrate with you all the achievements of members from our city’s Indian community,” Ms Porter said.

On the 23rd of August the ACT Legislative Assembly Art Advisory committee announced its newest acquisition, a textile artwork title Cyclorama, a collaborative work by artists of the tACTile group.

The quilted textile work, created by Helen Gray, Beth and Trevor Reid, Beth Miller, Jenny Bowker and Dianne Firth, in five panels – one by each artist.

Adapted from Robert Coulter’s 1911 painting Cycloramic View of Canberra Capital Site, a print of which is in the Assembly’s collection, the work was chosen by the committee to mark Canberra’s Centenary.

Beyond Bank Australia and Volunteering Australia Join Forces to Build Better Communities.

The three-year partnership between Beyond Bank Australia and Volunteering Australia was launched in Canberra on the 19th of August.

The partnership will underpin key activities including orchestrating national conferences to showcase best practice, implementing a new research program and continuing vital work in advocacy of the voluntary sector.

Last month Mary visited the Belconnen Community Men’s Shed being completed in Page to see what the local community are doing to make a difference for men.

"I am never surprised by what people working together can achieve", Ms Porter said, "It has often been my experience that a great amount of success will result."

Recently Mary attended the official launch of the RSPCA Cup Cake day, this year to be celebrated on the 19th of August.

Cup Cake Day is an initiative to raise awareness, about the work RSPCA does in the community, with domestic animals and wildlife and assist them by raising funds that will be used to combat animal cruelty and improve domestic animal care.

The RSPCA ACT had been serving the Canberra community for many years; caring for Canberra’s surrendered, injured, neglected and abused animals.

On the 25th of July, Mary was joined by Minister for Defence Materiel, the Hon Dr Mike Kelly, to celebrate the sponsorship by Northrop Grumman Corporation of Dickson College students for the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Outback Challenge 2013.

“I was very pleased with the announcement of the $10,000 sponsorship by Northrop Grumman Corporation to some of our most innovative college students,” Ms Porter said.

Recently Mary attended the Annual General Meeting and 3rd birthday, of the Friends of the Pinnacle (Fotpin), held at the Weetangera Primary School.

The meeting was attended by a special guest speaker- Dr. Jasmine Foxlee– recently appointed Volunteer and Parkcare Coordinator for the ACT Parks & Conservation Service, as well as three new Conservation Committee members- Mark Hallam, Keith Thomas and Denise Hall.
