On April 21st Mary launched the RSPCA’s Million Paws Walk, to be held at Commonwealth Park on 16th May 2010 from 11:00 am.

This annual fundraising event is now in its 16th year and is crucial in supporting the ongoing work of the RSPCA

“The RSPCA is well-known to many Canberrans through its rescue, shelter and re-homing of domestic animals,” said Ms Porter.

Last year the event was attended by over 9000 people and 3500 dogs, and helped raise funds that went towards running the RSPCA shelter at Weston, as well as supporting their education campaigns and inspectorate services.

“I visited the RSPCA shelter a few weeks ago and I and the Government are in constant contact with them in relation to policy aimed at improving animal welfare in the ACT,” Mary stated. “I recently moved a motion in the Legislative Assembly that seeks to address responsible pet ownership as I have a strong interest in animal welfare in the ACT,” she added.

“I call on people to show their support for this event,” Mary urged. “I plan to join the walk with my new dog, Lola, which I recently obtained from the RSPCA shelter,” she concluded
