Mary recently opened the 2012 School Sport Australia Water Polo Championships and congratulated all the participating players.

“I would like to thank all the people who have made this competition possible.

“School Sport Australia has provided an opportunity for talented young people to compete in high level competition in their chosen sport. Competitions of this calibre are only possible through the dedication and hard work of the many behind-the-scene workers and volunteers,” Mary said.

At the conclusion of this year’s competition a national team will be selected to represent Australia later this year in New Zealand in the International Challenge Tournament.

School Sport Australia Water Polo Championships have been a part of Australian sporting history since 1978 with the first event, male only, hosted in Sydney and the RK Mullins Perpetual Trophy won by NSW. In 1981 a female teams’ competition was introduced with the inaugural Perpetual Trophy and that was also won by NSW.

“Congratulations to the organisers of this important sporting event, the staff from School Sport ACT and School Sport Australia as well as all of the state and territory managers and coaches. Most importantly we should not forget the parents who have also worked very hard to get the players here and give them this wonderful opportunity,” Mary concluded.
