Last month Mary previewed the Right Here Right Now: Children & Young People Seen + Heart art installation which kicked off the first day of National Youth Week 2015. The project was also launched in unison with the 25th Anniversary of the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child which recognises the importance of our young people.

Right Here Right Now is a stunning collection of colourful self-portraits drawn by more than 11,000 young people from more than 50 Canberra schools. Students were asked by the Children and Young People Commissioner Alasdair Roy to draw a picture of themselves and to write a message about why it is important for adults to listen to children and young people.

“Not only were the portraits moving, they really got the students’ messages across and reminded everyone why we should always listen to young people, had Mary said.

“It is important not to just value our ‘future generation’, but rather understand their importance and what they say right here, right now.”
