Some time ago, Mary visited the Pegasus Riding School for the Disabled to talk about the organisation’s work.

As many would know, Pegasus is a not-for-profit group dedicated to providing people with a disability access to horse-riding. Around 100 Canberrans with a disability visit Pegasus Farm on an ongoing basis.

Pegasus has been operating in various forms since 1973 and since then helping people with a disability

“I was very privileged to visit Pegasus and see the young people and volunteers going through their paces.

“The work of Pegasus is crucial because it improves the lives of Canberrans living with a disability by providing them with an opportunity to learn a new skill and have fun!” Mary said.

There are also health benefits for participants with common benefits of horse-riding including improved balance, enhanced coordination and muscle development. Participants in the Pegasus program have also reported increased personal confidence and self-esteem, as well as a greater ability to trust others.

The Pegasus team is comprised of a number of experienced professionals and generous volunteers who ensure a safe and caring environment for those participating in the program.

“It is amazing to see so many Canberrans volunteering their time to assist. There is no doubt that without volunteers Pegasus would not be able to operate as many activities.

“I would encourage people to consider volunteering at Pegasus or elsewhere. Volunteering can be a valuable experience and it helps make our community a better place,” Mary concluded.
