Mary recently launched the Canberra Cares Lost Toy Appeal and asked Canberrans to donate toys, books and sporting equipment for the children and young people of Queensland and Victoria who have lost so much in the recent flood disasters.

“In true form Canberrans have responded to their fellow Australians in crisis with many fund-raising events planned over the forthcoming weeks,” Mary said.

The ACT Government has donated funds and sent a recovery team to Queensland and many Canberrans themselves have already made personal contributions to the victims of the floods.

“Children can miss out in times of severe crisis, when there is so much loss and so much to do to restore their lives,” Mary said, “this toy appeal is a special opportunity to assist children and young people who have also lost so much. The books, toys and sporting equipment will assist in a small way to minimise the impact of the disaster,” Mary stated.

Mary reminded those at the launch that Canberrans are always generous in times of crisis and come united to the needs of their fellow Australians. She said that it is another example of the goodwill that is generated when our community comes together.

Donations can be dropped off at designated ACT Police stations, Queanbeyan and Bungendore Police Stations, Westpac Bank branches and at the Toytopia warehouse at 1/45 Sheppard Street, or visit www.canberracares.com.au, for further information.
