Mary welcomed the inclusion of local representatives in a Project Reference Group formed to help guide the development of the Hawker commercial precinct through the creation of a draft Master Plan.

The representatives have been drawn from the Friends of Hawker Village, local businesses, Christ Church, the Council on the Aging and the Belconnen Community Council.

“The announcement by Chief Minister is most welcome,” Mary said. “Having lived in Hawker for more than 20 years I have both a personal as well as professional interest in the future of the shopping centre.

“I attended all bar one of the meetings that took place last year regarding the proposed development, and I am well aware that there are a diverse range of views about what should happen in the precinct,” Mary acknowledged.

“I have no doubt that all those who have accepted a place on the Project Reference Group are determined to help to achieve the best possible outcome for the centre’s future,” Mary added.

“I believe this collaborative approach will help produce a draft Master Plan that will go a long way towards meeting the needs of all those who use the business precinct now and into the future,” Mary stated.

“Hawker is my home and is special to me. As the local member, I will continue to seek to advocate for community involvement in decisions that affect it and help to achieve the best possible outcome for everybody,” Mary concluded
