Mary recently tabled ‘in-principle’ a new bill to ensure a level playing field for the ACT’s retirement village sector, the Retirement Villages Bill 2012.

The new bill signifies a change in approach as a result of the extensive consultation undertaken by Mary.

“To be clear, the reason for this new bill is my community consultation. I have listened to the concerns of all stakeholders and they have told me that they are fully supportive of this direction.

“As is well known, I have been conducting research and consultation in relation to fair trading law in retirement villages since 2006.

“It is important to note that the ACT is the only Australian state or territory without legislation in place to guide the operation of retirement villages.

“I believe this is the bill that meets the needs of the industry and the residents and I am happy with this approach resulting from the consultation,” Mary said.

“This bill provides proper protection to residents of retirement villages while also creating a structure which will foster sustainable growth in the retirement village sector. I hope that other members will support it in the Assembly when it is debated in detail,” Mary concluded.
