Mary recently presented awards to the winner, and highly commended entrants of the Marjorie Graber-McInnis Short Story category of the ACT Writers Centre Awards, at a function held at Olims Hotel, Braddon.

“The ACT Government is pleased to support writers through the ACT Writers Centre,” Mary said. “These annual awards give well-deserved recognition to writers and publishers.”

“As a poet myself I am always pleased to be involved in recognising the skill of Canberra’s fine writers and those publishing their works.”

The Marjorie Graber-McInnis Short Story Award was established by Mr Don McInnis to honour the life and work of his late wife Marjorie, an ACT-based writer of short stories. This is the 13th year in which the short story prize has been awarded.

This Award is one of a suite of annual ACT Writers Centre Awards presented. They aim to reward and promote ACT-based writing and publishing.

The winner was Jennifer Shapcott. Highly commended awards were presented to Michelle Brock (‘the Deep End’), Maeve Castles (‘Determination’), Doug Cocks (‘A Lovely Birthday’) and Claire Low (‘Cat’).

“These awards complement the recently announced ACT Book of the Year Award and ACT Poetry Prize. They draw attention to the vibrant and flourishing literary community we are fortunate to have here in the ACT.” Mary concluded.
