Pegasus Riding for the Disabled has spread its wings with the launch of the Pegasus Foundation with the aim of securing the financial future of the organisation.

Prominent local equestrian identities Ray Silburn and Niki van Buuren are the Foundation's joint patrons.

"Since the 2003 bushfires, when I was so badly burnt trying to rescue my horses, I have climbed back into the saddle at Pegasus" Niki said. "It has been a huge step for me both mentally and physically, but it is immensely rewarding when you hop in that saddle and take up the reins, it gives you an enormous feeling of freedom and control."

Former leading jockey Ray Silburn who had his riding career tragically cut short in early 2005 as the result of a fall during a race was told he would never walk or hold his kids again. "There was no way I was giving up" Ray said. "I have worked every moment of every day since to regain some movement in my hands and now I can hug my kids, use my mobile phone and get around just fine in my wheelchair."

Each week Pegasus caters for about 80 young people with a wide range of disabilities. An individual program is developed for each based on their unique needs and abilities and there is no doubt about the benefits that the riders achieve.

At his first visit to Pegasus Ray said "The kids obviously loved the experience with the horse, it brought back all the struggles I have been through since my accident and made me realise just how much horses can influence people."
