Mary has welcomed the commencement of work to install safety screens along the Chandler Street Bridge in Belconnen.

“The new safety screens will be installed to prevent objects being thrown down on to moving buses.

“As part of the 2008-09 Budget, the Government invested $3.6 million over four years to install safety screens at high-risk locations to eliminate the risk of serious injury to motorists and pedestrians,” Mary commented.

The ACT Government has progressively installed safety screens at various locations across the ACT. Sites have been chosen based on several criteria including the type of road under the bridge, the level of pedestrian access, and whether the bridge is near a school, hotel or club.

“Safe alternative pedestrian routes have been put in place while work takes place on Chandler Street Bridge and every effort is being made to avoid disruptions to traffic during peak periods.

“Safety screens have also been installed at the Kent Street Bridge over Adelaide Avenue. Forward planning and design work for the installation of safety screens at other locations is also under way.

“Rock throwing at vehicles is not just a silly prank – it can cause serious damage and injury. I urge people to report any incidents to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000,” Mary concluded.
